Air emissions - carbon monoxide (CO)

AGL Torrens (which includes the Barker Inlet Power Station) emissions have remained relatively consistent with FY19 figures. Emissions are mainly produced from the combustion of pipeline natural gas, which decreased by 15% compared to FY19. Barker Inlet Power Station contributed approximately 23% of the emissions reported for AGL Torrens, mainly from the combustion of pipeline natural gas.

Carbon monoxide emissions from the Loy Yang Power Station increased 49% compared to FY19. The increase is largely due to conditions within the Unit 3 boiler and ancillary equipment affecting combustion efficiency. Rectification of these issues can only be undertaken during an extended unit outage. Emissions remained within EPA licence conditions.

Carbon monoxide emissions at the Bayswater Power Station decreased 2% compared to FY19, mainly due to 2% reduction in total coal combusted at the facility. Liddell Power Station emissions increased 14%, aligning with the 14% increase in coal combusted, and 14% increase in total electricity produced for transmission to the grid.

Newcastle Gas Storage Facility carbon monoxide emissions decreased due to a 98.5% decrease in gas flaring compared to FY19.

  • FY20 data was updated in December 2020. A subset of data (comprising emissions associated with the combustion of black coal at Bayswater and Liddell power stations, black and brown coal as well as natural gas at AGL Loy Yang Power Station, and gas and fuel oil at AGL Torrens) was reported with the initial release of the FY20 Annual Report on 13 August 2020.

  • For the purposes of this data set, AGL Torrens comprises the Torrens Island Power Station and the Barker Inlet Power Station, which commenced operation in December 2019.

  • Air emission data is measured in CO(kg) and is rounded to nearest kilogram.

  • Air emissions data for AGL sites is publicly reported NPI data. See

  • The emission factors used in AGL's NPI reports are sourced from relevant industry emission estimation technique manuals available on the NPI website.

  • Wallumbilla LPG Plant became operational in 2016 hence NPI reporting commenced for this site in FY17.

  • Kwinana Swift Power Station was purchased by AGL in FY2020.

  • The National Assets were sold in FY19.
