Air emissions - volatile organic compounds (VOC)

Emissions at AGL Torrens (which includes the Barker Inlet Power Station) decreased 13% compared to FY19, due to the 43% reduction in fuel oil and 15% reduction in pipeline natural gas combusted at the facility. Emissions from the Barker Inlet Power Station contributed approximately 9% of the emissions recorded for AGL Torrens.

Loy Yang A Power Station emissions decreased 9% compared to FY19, mainly due to a 9% reduction in coal combusted at the facility compared to FY19.

The increase in TVOC emissions at the Liddell Power Station can be attributed to variations in the stack test results (average of 0.0112mg/m3 in FY19 compared to average of 0.197mg/m3 in FY20). Total gas flow is also up 18% compared to FY19 and total electricity produced for transmission is up 14%.

Bayswater Power Station emissions of TVOC has remained relatively consistent with FY19, aligning with similar electricity production between the reporting periods.

Newcastle Gas Storage Facility TVOC emissions decreased due to a 98.5% decrease in gas flaring compared to FY19.


  • FY20 data was updated in December 2020. A subset of data (comprising emissions associated with the combustion of black coal at Bayswater and Liddell power stations, black and brown coal as well as natural gas at AGL Loy Yang Power Station, and gas and fuel oil at AGL Torrens) was reported with the initial release of the FY20 Annual Report on 13 August 2020.

  • For the purposes of this data set, AGL Torrens comprises the Torrens Island Power Station and the Barker Inlet Power Station.
