Air emissions - sulphur dioxide (SO2)
Emissions from AGL Torrens (which includes the Barker Inlet Power Station) decreased 20% compared to FY19, mainly due to a 43% reduction in fuel oil combusted at the facility. Emissions from the Barker Inlet Power Station contributed approximately 40% of the sulphur dioxide emissions reported for AGL Torrens.
Loy Yang A Power Station emissions decreased 11% compared to FY19, due to lower sulphur dioxide emissions measured through the Continuous Emissions Monitoring (CEMS) results. The decrease in emissions aligns with a 9% reduction in electricity production at the facility.
Bayswater Power Station emissions decreased 16% compared to FY19, and may be due to a reduction in coal sulphur content (0.41% in FY19 compared to 0.38% in FY20). Liddell Power Station emissions increased 19% compared to FY19, which can be attributed to a 14% increase in electricity production and fuel combustion (coal up 14% and diesel up 8%).
Newcastle Gas Storage Facility sulphur dioxide emissions decreased due to a 98.5% decrease in gas flaring compared to FY19.
Kwinana Swift Power Station sulphur dioxide emissions decreased due to an 86% decrease in diesel fuel combustion compared to FY19.
FY20 data was updated in December 2020. A subset of data (comprising emissions associated with the combustion of black coal at Bayswater and Liddell power stations, black and brown coal as well as natural gas at AGL Loy Yang Power Station, and gas and fuel oil at AGL Torrens) was reported with the initial release of the FY20 Annual Report on 13 August 2020.
For the purposes of this data set, AGL Torrens comprises the Torrens Island Power Station and the Barker Inlet Power Station which commenced operation in December 2019.
All figures have been restated to the nearest kilogram.
Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS) was introduced to Units 2, 3 and 4 at Bayswater Power Station in November 2017.
The National Assets were sold in FY19.
Wallumbilla LPG Plant became operational in 2016 hence NPI reporting for this site commenced in FY17.
FY16 SO2 air emissions data for the Newcastle Gas Storage facility has been restated, following correction of a transcription error.
Air emissions data for AGL sites is publicly reported NPI data (see www.npi.gov.au).
Kwinana Swift Power Station was purchased by AGL in FY20.
The emission factors used in AGL's NPI reports are sourced from relevant industry emission estimation technique manuals available on the NPI website.
